Character's Clothing

Kulsoom= Rita
At first her dress code is going to be her wearing glasses, cardigans, and her colours will be quite bright such as reds, pink and blues for her so stand out. Additionally her referral would be quite parallel to Ugly Betty, more ‘nerdy’ and outrageous colours.
However after her personality changes dramatically so does her dress sense as she starts to wear more jeans, hoodies, quite ghetto clothing and she also loses her glasses and starts to wear contacts because this is portrayed to be ‘cooler’. Furthermore her colours will also change such as having more black and white colours as she fits in towards the society around her.
Pavan= Rafael
Pavan is a student who is focused on school therefore we will carry out the basic codes and conventions such as normal jeans of any colour, shirts, t-shirts and normal smart jackets. All of Pavan’s clothes should be smart and he should wear glasses in certain times such as class.

Farhan=Giovanni- he is the drug dealer and the “p.i.m.p” of the school. His clothing would consist of ghetto “hood” clothing such as tracksuits, baggy jeans, hoodies, caps, “bling” jewellery. His informal clothing will represent his lack of attention or respect to school or education.
Harpreet= anam- she like Rita will be in colourful nerdy clothing. That will also consist of bright jumpers, glasses and trousers

Audience

As the brief has instructed us to make the ratings for this movie 15, our audience will all be over this age yet primarily under 25 as it is targeted at students and young people. We predict that this trailer will attract more females as the protagonist is a female which is unusual and represents the alternative ideology. However our primary target audience consist of both genders as this hybrid genre contains both gangster and romance. The gangster scenes will gain attention from the males as there is much use of violence, drugs, guns and some sexual content. Females would be attracted as firstly they see the protagonist a female and would be persuaded into watching it as we live in a patriarchal society where women are seen as inferior to men however this film contradicts this as the female is seen as dominant or the overall “hero”, also the film has a powerful love story and is prone to emotional feelings & as females are sensitive they may feel impassioned by this, the story is also about the friendship between two girls and to what lengths one would go to In order to save their friend.

Characters

Main protagonist
Keri= Kulsoom
Age- 17
Occupation- full time student
Keri is the main character in this film. She is a straight A student also considered a “nerd” and a social outcast. She enters a new school and being the outcast that she is nobody likes her. She befriends another girl like herself and the two begin to form a special bonding. However circumstances arrive that test how strong their friendship really is and to what lengths one would go to in order to save their friend.
A shy character to begin with but as the movie unfolds we start to understand why Keri is the way she is.

Rita- Harpreet
Age- 17
Occupation- full time student
Rita is seen as another shy character and of “nerdy origins” however we see her blossom when she is alone with Keri as she is much more bubbly and full of life. Generally she has no social life, and has always been a victim of bullying for as long as she can remember, when she met Keri she started opening up to her and trusted her, their friendship grew strong, but like all great things in life it came at a cost and the price to pay could merely be her life.

Rafael Chana- Pavandeep
Age- 17
Occupation- full time student/worked at boots on the weekends
Rafael a sweet average boy who falls dangerously in love with Keri and is love struck by their first meeting. A sociable character with a humorous side, puts his life on the line in order to win Keri’s heart, was it all worth it in the end?

Geovani- Farhan

Occupation- full time student/ drug dealer
He is the gangster/pimp of the school, who is always surrounded by girls and all the boys respect him, he sells drugs such as cannabis and cocaine. He is a regular consumer of the drugs. He develops a crush for the new girl Keri and eventually befriends her, he heavily influences her with the drugs and Keri being the vulnerable girl that she is, is manipulated by him. However when Keri comes back to him in her time of need he rejects her.

Fat Tony-
Age- 23
Occupation- The “DON” drug dealer
Fat tony is the don of west London and a much respected drug dealer and runs the business, Geovani gives Keri the opportunity to “shot” (sell drugs) to him, Keri makes a mistake by charging him much extra then is worth, Tony finds out and plots his revenge.

“The girls”

They are there to represent Giovanni’s dominance and power. There outfits are more revealing to give the sexual appeal. They will be seen as ignorant and “chavy” who pass by “bitchy” comments to either Keri or Rita.

Public enemies....kulsoom

Public enemies.

Reviews

The film public enemies fits into our hybrid genre perfectly and gets the very best out of the gangster and romance genre’s. The films website has an excellent theme of the dark settings as there are in the film. Their audience would enjoy the site as they provide all information about the film e.g. as it was based on a true story it tells you the history, a full profile of every character in the film and directors profile. They also give the audience an option to order the DVD with special features.

The trailer from the very beginning has you hooked to watch the rest, an incredible soundtrack to drag the audience further in and stay focused as the story begins to unfold. Once the very vague version of the plot is told, the quick shots of all the action kicks in along with some romance scenes. The film is set in 1930’s America as it was just undergoing the great depression so the setting is quite old yet we are inclined to feel it is new as this is the period when cars, phones and industry where becoming popular. They end the trailer with the classic pulling of trigger and then the name of the film. Throughout the trailer there was a on-screen narration which is effective to have in gangster films.

The reviews of this film vary in may ways, some highly criticise it and the director saying he has produced too many films with this genre and has not dwelled deeper, other critics have highly praised this movie saying in a time where most movies are about robotic monsters trying to destroy the world, this comes as a surprise into a period of American history which is often over-looked (the gangsters during the depression),

Overall I have chosen this film as a good focus point for my group as not only does it contain both our genre’s, it shares some of our ideologies of a person who is bad turning good. In our case it is reversed, however the same concept applies, also the media language is quite inspiring considering how they have directed and produced it.

Farhan...Codes & conventions of Characters

Codes & conventions of Characters

Gangster movies
In all gangster movies we see a common list of stereotyped characters.
An example of a great film that uses all the different types of characters is the godfather.
The don (including his family)
Concierge
Henchmen
The snitch
Other families ( Don)
The common thing that runs through all these characters is that they are all linked through violence, drugs and the most important thing money!
In most all gangster films the common codes and conventions in all characters we see that they are all males.
Females are portrayed as being the “femme fetals” and are always shown as being sex symbols however men are always shown to be dominant by the way they dress and there dialogues

Romance movies
In all romance movies we see a love story between 2 characters; male and female
Male – portrayed as being dominant but also shows that his weakness is the girl he loves
Female – portrayed as also being as dominant as the male yet still struggles between her social life, work and love life

Pavan.... iconograpy

The film genre chosen by me and my group is a hybrid genre which consists of gangster and romance. Due to it being a gangster genre the iconography for the film would generally be scenes of violence to interest the audience, and also weapons to make the audience excited yet anxious to what is going to happen. Furthermore illegal substances will be used such as: drugs and alcohol, this will promote the fact that the genre is gangster due to the rebellious things used. Moreover the setting within the scene would be quite dark to create tension and for the audience to quite frightened and anxious therefore the scenes must consist of low key lighting.  The sound must be quite sharp and loud to make people ‘jump off their seats’ such as a gun shot, to frighten people of what has happened. Furthermore the quick take off shots and the quick cuts must be included in specific scenes such as the violent ones therefore many people will more thrilled about the quick takes being used.
In addition to this as it is a hybrid genre the iconography for the romance used must contain such scenes of sexual (hugs, kissing etc) therefore encouraging the love between one another. The typical scenes used for a romantic genre is candle lit dinners, ‘personal time’ etc. the sounds used would be very mellow, soft and slow music to create a sense of happiness, and the lighting used would be quite dim, and low to show only but expressions of peoples faces, and certain movements.

Settings – Snatch Trailer....Harpreet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9suh_UR_O0&feature=related
The aim of all the characters in the trailer is to gain the diamond. At the beginning of the trailer we see a man who is sitting in a room on his own with dim light and on the phone. This has connotations to a dark secret. During the conversation the man uses a lot of violent language, which reflects the anger and attitude towards the second person (negativity). The person on the other line is in his office finalising the trip to London. This shows that cousin Avi is a professional and both are working towards the same goal. After the introduction of these two men the next scenes involves money, one gives, other snatches, the other robs and finally the last one gambles – cycle of money.
When the director focuses on the diamond there’s a brighter light, this has connotations to something exclusive. Notice before this scene all other scenes are shot in dim light, this builds the tension and excitement amongst the audience. These shots have a extreme-close up so the audience can view the beautiful of the diamond which is why everyone is fighting for it – connotations to the title.
The pace slowly increases and there are quick edits between the introduction of people. The purpose of this is to show the audience who stars in the movie however due to limited time they have to be fast. This builds the suspense as the audience have to remain focused in order to gain a brief introduction to characters as well as the story. During these scenes the sounds become more dramatic which builds excitement amongst the audience – most sounds are non- diagetic as violence isn’t treated with shock but loud and exciting music.
